LSVT LOUD and BIG at Houston Physicians’ Hospital
Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) both LOUD and BIG rehabilitation treatments have been proven to improve both speech and movement for patients with Parkinson’s Disease as well as similar neurological conditions. The organization has trained speech, physical and occupational therapists at Houston Physicians’ Hospital to help both children and adults who have lost their vocal abilities and improve their physical movement.
The LSVT LOUD Program, which helps patients improve their speech and vocal loudness through voice box muscle stimulation and an array of exercises. Most commonly used to treat speech impairments for patients with any stage of Parkinson’s Disease (PD), it can also be used to treat other neurological conditions. When people with PD or other condition lose the ability to know how loud or soft they are speaking, LSVT LOUD helps them “recalibrate” so that they can control the volume in their voice so that it’s at the appropriate level depending upon where they’re speaking: indoors, outdoors or in large or small gatherings.
The LSVT BIG Program helps PD patients improve how they move their body by optimizing motor skills, mobility, and balance that are essential in performing daily activities. People who are stricken with PD or other neurological disorders have smaller and slower movements and gestures. Simple tasks such as getting dressed and walking are difficult, if not impossible. LSVT BIGimproves the patient’s balance and active movements like buttoning their shirt or getting up from a chair. LSVT BIG helps patients “recalibrate” how they see their movements. When they see their motions as what they really are, they can manage the effort needed to produce bigger or smaller motions which allow them to move more normally.
